WHO renames monkeypox to ‘mpox’

The World Health Organisation has revealed its plans to begin using the term “mpox” as a replacement for monkeypox.
After receiving complaints the current term for the disease was racist and stigmatising, the WHO launched a public consultation process to find a new name, receiving more than 200 proposals.
Both names will be used simultaneously for one year while “monkeypox” is phased out.
