Man Utd transfer news: Cody Gakpo responds to United interest | Football
Cody Gakpo insists he is concentrating on the World Cup and not a potential transfer to Manchester United, but suggests that ‘anything is possible’.
The Dutch forward has long been linked to United and transfer talk has only grown after his eye-catching performances in Qatar where he has scored two goals in two games for Louis van Gaal’s side.
This follows his scintillating form for PSV, where he has scored 13 goals and made 17 assists in just 24 games so far this season.
Following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, Erik ten Hag will be prioritising the signing of a new forward come January, and Gakpo is said to be top of a shortlist that also contains Chelsea outcast Christian Pulisic.
But the 23-year-old has many admirers, including Arsenal with Mikel Arteta keen to add another winger to his roster.
For now though, the player insists he is not thinking about January with the Netherlands yet to book their place in the round-of-16 following a disappointing draw with Ecuador.
‘I’m focused now on the World Cup. It’s always nice to hear but I just focus here and do my best,’ Gakpo said when asked about the interest from United.
‘I don’t get shy about the rumours. It’s nice things that people write, but I’m not too concerned with that.
‘I’m not surprised. I know what I’m capable of but it’s always a challenge to reach your highest level possible and I think I’m not there yet. I think I can improve in a lot of things.
‘It’s a team sport, it’s not about one person. I prefer it to be about the team. Right now I’m busy with the Dutch team.
‘I’ll see what happens in the winter. In soccer, anything is possible.’
Meanwhile, former PSV technical director John de Jong claims that Gakpo is prioritising a move to United and hopes it will happen soon.
The Netherlands final Group A game on Tuesday sees them take on hosts Qatar, who have already been knocked-out of the tournament.
