Thanksgiving: PSA urges people to stop burning homes by frying turkeys
‘Cook the turkey, not your home’ – that’s the message the US is sending to Americans preparing their Thanksgiving meals.
To illustrate the dangers of deep-frying turkeys in the wrong setting, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) put out a PSA video ahead of the holiday on Thursday.
The clip shows four instances of deep-frying turkeys gone dangerously wrong. The first scene shows a raw turkey being lowered into the fryer set near the outside wall of a home and shows it explode into flames. The same thing happens in the next clip inside a room.
A third scene shows a turkey going into a deep fryer and combusting on what appears to be a porch. In the fourth and final scene, inside a home, the flames from a turkey in the fryer spread across the floor. The videos are set to upbeat music in the background meant to make the mood light but drive the point home.
‘Only fry a turkey outside and away from your home,’ stated the CPSC earlier this week. ‘Never use turkey fryers in the garage or on the porch.’
Turkey fryers have posed a risk for years. They have been a factor in 217 fire or burn incidents and caused 83 injuries and $9.5million in property loss since 2000, according to the CPSC.
Cooking fires are the leading cause of residential fires. There are roughly 165,600 cooking fires annually, resulting in about 200 deaths and 3,200 injuries per year, the CPSC reports. And each Thanksgiving Day about 1,600 cooking fires are recorded, which is more than three times the average number of such incidents during the year.
‘Unfortunately, distractions can pose a risk and result in residential fires. Remember that a cooking fire is more likely to occur during the holidays. In fact, Thanksgiving Day is when most of the home cooking fires occur in the US,’ the CPSC stated.
‘Never leave cooking food unattended on the stove or in the oven.’
